The Volvo S60 is a nice car, but fell short in this highly competitive class. It is neither a sports sedan, nor is it particularly luxurious. Still, we liked its turbocharged engine, fairly quiet interior and comfortable front seats. However, it lacks agility, ride comfort and rear seat room. Some of the controls are awkward as well. On the other hand, as you'd expect from a Volvo, the S60 earned very good scores in government side-impact and insurance-industry crash tests.
In most cases, automotive warranties are based on the vehicle identification number (VIN), and the warranty will be valid regardless of ownership. The dealership can tell you exactly how much warranty is left.
Read more about extended warrantiesThe redesigned 2019 S60 sedan is quiet, has an uncluttered and elegant interior, and comfortable seats. The T5 uses an energetic 250-hp, turbo four-cylinder engine that drives the front wheels. This combination returned 26 mpg overall in our tests. The T6 brings all-wheel drive, plus a more powerful 316-hp four-cylinder that is both turbocharged and supercharged. In typical Volvo fashion, the ride is stiff. Handling is sound but unexceptional. Unfortunately, the S60 is plagued with Volvo's unintuitive infotainment system, which requires too much swiping, tapping and eyes off the road. The S60 comes standard with automatic emergency braking with the ability to recognize and respond to pedestrians and cyclists. Updates for 2021 include standard blind spot warning and rear cross traffic warning. For 2022, there is only one engine, a 247 hp 2.0-liter turbo employing mild hybrid technology.
A 2011 redesign made the S60 much nicer, with agile handling and a taut, steady ride. The standard T5 is pretty lively, but the top-level T6 is quicker and more refined. Among the advanced safety gear is an innovation Volvo called "City Safety". This helps prevent low-speed crashes by scanning the road ahead, sounding an alarm and applying the brakes if you are likely to collide with the car in front of you. This feature has since spread throughout the industry. Today, it is known as forward collision mitigation. The T5's five-cylinder engine can sound gruff, but provides lively acceleration and respectable fuel economy. The interior is quiet, neatly finished and front-seat comfort is excellent. However, the rear seats are best suited for children and trunk capacity is meager.
