    Jaguar XJ First Drive

A choice of V8s and a five-speed automatic transmission comprise a smooth and spirited drivetrain, making this Jaguar competitive with premium models from BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz. The ride is supremely comfortable. Accommodations are a bit tight for this class, however. For 2002, the extended-wheelbase L model has been dropped in favor of the new XJ8 Sport and the limited-edition XJR100. Also available are the even more luxurious Vanden Plas and its supercharged sibling, the Super V8. We lack sufficient data to predict reliability. Expect a complete redesign of this aging model for 2003.
