    First Take
Hyundai positions the Sonata as a competitor to the refined Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, but the Sonata doesn't quite make the grade in such worthy company. It comes well equipped, with side air bags, safety-belt pretensioners, and a longer-than-usual five-year basic warranty. Engine choices include a 2.4-liter, 149-hp Four or a 2.5-liter, 170-hp V6. To get antilock brakes you must choose the V6 and purchase an expensive option package. The Sonata's ride and handling are somewhat behind most competitors.
