    Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2011 Hyundai Elantra owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    Electrical Accessories

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, USB ports, alarm or security system, remote engine start, heated or cooled seats, heated steering wheel, headlights, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, wireless charging pad.

    What Owners Say

    Exterior lights (other than headlights)

"I'm constantly having to replace tail lights. I suspect it's because the seal around the brake light assembly is not water tight enough and leads to the bulbs shorting out. Or it's that the electrical to those lights is bad."

Anonymous, TX (2011 Hyundai Elantra Unsure Unsure)

"Brake light switch has failed twice in last year. The second time, its failure caused the gear shift selector to lock up."

Anonymous, GA (2011 Hyundai Elantra GLS 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
    Horn

"The horn stopped working but prior to that, the cruise control also stopped working along with some of the other in steering wheel controls. They had to replace the airbag system along with the horn. I think it was the clockspring? It was quite expensive and the parts had to be ordered so it took a while to get it fixed."

Anonymous, TX (2011 Hyundai Elantra Unsure Unsure)
    Other electrical system problem

"Car had several issues with starting. It was repaired once but the problem seemed to reoccure...perhaps due to a different causes. It started about 2 years ago and comes and goes. There was one or two times in the last year where it did not start easily. Have to play with key and gear shift. Then suddenly it starts. No power goes to starter up until the point it works. There is power in the car the whole time."

Anonymous, ON (2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

Anonymous, OR (2011 Hyundai Elantra Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"The iPhone hardware dongle is expensive, out of date, and poorly made. Frequently the Elantra software will refuse to acknowledge the phone."

Anonymous, CA (2011 Hyundai Elantra Unsure 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
    Speakers

"Speakers on the right side of the car made crackly muffled sounds so I adjusted the sound to only come out the left speakers. I have not yet fixed the problem."

Anonymous, CA (2011 Hyundai Elantra GLS Unsure)

    Noises And Leaks

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, seals and/or weather stripping, air and water leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Seals and/or weather-stripping

"The door weather seals come off rather easily. I had to pull over the other day and reseat it because if it's not on properly it makes a noise. Also the windshield wiper fluid hose must have come off on the driver side. I need to fix this as it only sprays up about 2 inches on the passenger side and no fluid contacts the windshield on the driver's side. The pump sounds normal."

Anonymous, ON (2011 Hyundai Elantra GLS 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
    Squeaks or rattles

"rear stabilizer struts have been replaced 3 times. Never last more than 5000 km"

Anonymous, ON (2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"hit a pot hole and driver side strut broke"

Anonymous, MA (2011 Hyundai Elantra GLS 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
    Steering wheel vibration

"Took to two garages because the first garage wanted to replace the entire steering column. A piece broke off inside the column which had to be replaced."

Anonymous, PA (2011 Hyundai Elantra Unsure 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

    Climate System

AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate system, electrical failure, refrigerant leakage.

    What Owners Say

    Refrigerant leaks

"Would not hold refrigerant for over a week but is a the dealership now for this and power steering failure."

Anonymous, CT (2011 Hyundai Elantra Unsure Unsure)

"The air conditioning system became less and less efficient during the summer of last year. I went to a garage with expertise in auto air conditioning systems. After performing the diagnostic procedure, the mechanic showed me that the refrigerent was gradually being lost. He repaired the leakage and, since the start of the summer this year, the air conditioning functioned, again, satisfactory."

Anonymous, QC (2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

    Transmission Minor

Gear selector and linkage, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Transmission sensor or solenoid

"C CEL light led to discovery that transmission temp sensor had failed. Six hundred soars to replace at local Hyundai dealer. Seems to be a common problem with this model."

Anonymous, GA (2011 Hyundai Elantra GLS 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Trans slipped a couple of times, took it in and had it repaired."

Anonymous A., IL (2011 Hyundai Elantra Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

    Brakes

Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, regenerative braking.

    What Owners Say

    Other brakes problem

"Same as premature brakes problem, but I wanted to indicate it was more than just simple wear and tear, but rather a separation of the pads from the metal."

Anonymous A., MI (2011 Hyundai Elantra Limited Unsure)
    Premature brake wear

"Dealer indicated the pads had come loose from the metal they are attached to. Since I drive such a small amount, I waited about a year for repair. It needed new rotors and brakes all the way around. At 37K miles? Sounds like a defect to me."

Anonymous A., MI (2011 Hyundai Elantra Limited Unsure)

    Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Other/unsure

"The ease of stealing Elantras of certain model years because of a design flaw resulted in thieves attempting to steal my car. They did not steal the car since my car is not from one of the affected design years, but they did break my window which took weeks to replace because there is such a high demand for Elantras windows given the theft problem."

Anonymous, MO (2011 Hyundai Elantra GLS 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

    "Replaced the front wheel bearings"

Anonymous, TX (2011 Hyundai Elantra GLS 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

    Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, premature clutch replacement.

    What Owners Say

    Transmission rebuild or replacement

"In 2019 I was on my way to the Outer Banks of NC when the engine started running rough and the check engine light came on. While in OBX I went to an auto parts store to have the engine code read, then called the dealer in Richmond, VA to ask whether I needed to get the car repaired before I drive it home. The code indicated a problem with a solenoid associated with the transmission. The check engine light went out later during my vacation, but came back on again during the trip home. As the dealership had told me it was ok to continue to drive as long as the check engine light stayed steady (not blinking), I continued home. I took the car to the dealership after I got home, but the check engine light had turned off again by itself. I provided the print-out from the OBX auto parts store, showing the check engine code. Because the check engine light wouldnt come back on while the dealership had the car, they said they couldnt fix anything under the warranty, which was still in force. During 2020-2021, I drove very little. I worked from home and didnt travel outside my local area. The car had occasional moments of rough running, such as delay in acceleration and chugging. In late 2022, I drove to MD for a funeral. Again, the check engine light came on (steady) and the car ran very rough. I took the car back to the dealership, where they diagnosed a bad transmission. I reminded them that I had tried to get transmission-related repairs in 2019, but the dealership refused to take any responsibility or provide a discount. A new transmission was installed in Jan. 2023."

Anonymous, VA (2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring Unsure)

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt.

    What Owners Say

    Engine rebuild or replacement

"Engine was knocking at around 65,000 miles, was reported twice to local dealer. It failed at 105,000. Hyundai wouldnt warranty, but I had mechanical 2nd party insurance included when I purchased."

Anonymous, OR (2011 Hyundai Elantra Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
