    First Take
The Canyon is the replacement for the Sonoma compact pickup truck and is a twin of the Chevrolet Colorado-the S-10's replacement. Both are available in regular-, extended-, and crew-cab versions. ABS is standard. Four-wheel drive is optional, but it's only a part-time system, unsuitable for use on dry pavement. These new trucks are powered by either a 2.8-liter four-cylinder or 3.5-liter five-cylinder. Both engines are a bit crude and noisy. A V6 won't be offered. Shifting is done via either a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual. The cabin is fairly quiet, and ride and handling are more accomplished than in other compact pickups.
