Cleaning & Disinfecting Wipes
Tub O'Towels Heavy Duty Cleaning Wipes
Tub O’Towel Heavy-Duty Cleaning Wipes are big enough for heavy-duty cleaning and reusing. Dried-up sweet potato, milk, hot sauce, and rice were no match for these wipes. They were also easy to dispense from the tub.
This is a modest discount, but it’s a great product at any price so you might as well save where you can.
Dish Soap
Dawn Platinum Dishwashing Liquid Dish Soap
When we tested three of Dawn’s dish soaps against each other, we found that they all cleaned dishes well. It produced rich suds in warm water, cleaned dishes easily, and was as easy to dispense as the brand’s Ultra and Platinum Plus PowerSuds. Its smell is identical to Dawn Ultra—a clean, bright smell that does not linger on dishes. Our evaluator didn’t notice any dryness on her hands after washing a sink full of dishes.
You can save $1.50 on a single dish soap at Walgreens.
Dawn Ultra Dishwashing Soap
This dish soap from Dawn is our top pick because of the amount of thick suds it creates and the number of dishes we were able to wash with just a half tablespoon of this soap. We found this soap easy to dispense, with a pleasant and fresh fragrance. Take advantage of saving $1.50 on this fantastic dish soap.
Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Dish Soap (Basil scent)
This dish soap produced rich suds and had an elevated, herbal scent like no other we tested. It is also available in an easy-to-dispense 16-ounce bottle. Its biodegradable formula contains plant-derived cleaning agents, and it doesn’t contain parabens or phthalates.
Nellie's Dish Butter
Choosing a soap bar like Nellie’s Dish Butter, which was our top choice for dish soap bars, helps you cut down on plastic waste and still get your dishes, pots, and pans squeaky clean. This one created a nice amount of suds and boasted an herbal scent that we found pleasant and not overpowering.
Dishwasher Detergent
This dishwasher detergent earned the highest score of all the pod and gel detergents we’ve tested. It cleans well and minimizes film and discoloration on dishes. Plus, you’re saving more than $5 when you buy it now.
For a middling price, Finish Powerball Ultimate dishwasher pods deliver above-average results in our tests, with excellent scores in both cleaning dishes and resisting film and mineral deposits. They also ward off water spots. They include scum-fighting enzymes, but no bleach.
Facial Tissue
Caboo Tree Free Facial Tissue
Caboo is CR’s pick for the strongest eco-friendly tissues. Although they could have been softer, they excelled in terms of absorbency, strength, and abrasion resistance. You’ll get four boxes with a total of 480 tissues for 20 percent off.
Great Value Utra Soft (120 sheets)
Our runner-up facial tissue pick is Walmart’s Great Value Ultra Soft, a three-ply tissue that is among the lowest-priced tissues we tested. It had an overall above-average score and stood out most for its softness and absorbency. Although it wasn’t as soft as Member’s Mark Ultra Soft, Kirkland Signature Facial Tissue, or Kleenex Ultra Soft Hypoallergenic, our evaluator found it soft enough not to irritate her sensitive skin.
Presto! Ultra-Soft Facial Tissue
This three-ply facial tissue from Presto! stood out for its absorbency, but it wasn’t as strong or tear-resistant as other tissues. However, it felt soft in hand and was easy to pull out from its packaging.
A four-pack of these tissues will support you through flu season and is currently being offered at 10 percent off.
Multipurpose Cleaners
Mr. Clean Clean Freak
We chose Mr. Clean as our favorite multipurpose cleaner because it effortlessly cleaned most surfaces we purposely made dirty, meets EPA Safer Product Standards, and features a “power nozzle” that gives the user a unique amount of control over how much spray they add to surfaces. The other cleaners emit the same amount of spray each time, but this one can spray a short, medium, or continuous burst of cleaner.
Mrs. Meyers Multisurface Everyday Cleaner
This multipurpose cleaner is great for light to medium cleaning, and it counts on plant-derived ingredients and essential oils to get the job done. It left streaks on stainless steel and mirrors, though, so we recommend separate products for these cleaning tasks.
Presto All Purpose Cleaner, Real Lemon Scent
This cleaner effectively tackled grease and sticky surfaces in our tests. We didn’t love its scent—which was pungent for lavender—but we found that its nozzle delivered a large amount of spray, so our cleaning tasks took less time.
Napkins
Caspari Moiré Guest Napkins
These beautiful napkins were our top pick for formal napkins in our tests. The three-ply paper napkins are sturdy, durable, and look great on your table. Snag these before your holiday meal to wow guests without the need to launder cloth napkins.
Caboo Tree Free Napkins
These casual bamboo napkins were the strongest in our tests and did a great job of removing sticky honey from our hands without ripping. They aren’t the most aesthetically pleasing, but they get the job done and are ideal for anyone seeking a sustainable option.
Powder Cleansers
Bar Keepers Friend Cleanser
Of the four powdered products we tested, Bar Keepers Friend removed knife scratches from ceramic plates best. It also had the longest list of surfaces it is safe to use on, including boats, sporting equipment, and vinyl siding.
Bon Ami Scratch-Free Powder Cleanser
Our top pick for powder cleansers was Bon Ami because it tackled dirt and grime from a stainless steel sink like a dream, and even removed knife marks from ceramic plates. It was also the only powder we tested to have all but one of its ingredients included in the Environmental Protection Agency’s Safer Chemical Ingredients List.
Quart Bags
GreeneWrap Compostable Zip Quart Bags
These compostable bags felt like a luxury to use. They performed amazingly well in our leak tests and feature a calendar, allowing you to mark dates and ensure your food remains fresh. Although they weren’t the easiest bags to open and close, they impressed us with their strength and durability.
Ziploc Storage Quart Bags
Although hard to close, these are very sturdy bags, and make a great option for parents with toddlers who have a penchant for throwing their snacks. We love their stand-up bottom, which makes it easier to add foods without making a mess. These are perfect for food prep and leftovers.
Toilet Paper
Amazon Basics Bath Tissue
This is an incredibly low price for 37 rolls of toilet paper. In CR’s tests, we found that this two-ply option produced less lint than most, and is soft with a light texture on both sides. We crowned it our favorite budget TP.
Reel Bamboo Toilet Paper
This bamboo toilet paper was an all-around winner: sturdy, easy to start a roll, and individually wrapped in stylish paper. It’s not the softest—but on the other hand, it’s not linty. This three-ply paper comes in a pack of 12 rolls.
Who Gives A Crap 100% Bamboo Toilet Paper
Our top pick of toilet paper in testing was this three-ply bamboo option, which was virtually lint-free and came in adorable packaging that you won’t mind displaying. It isn’t the softest paper, though, so choose a different brand if you have sensitive skin.
