Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2018 Hyundai Tucson owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, fuel leaks, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Oil leaks

""We were going through a couple quarts of oil every 1000 miles with resulting engine problems. . Hyundai repair team put us on oil study then finally replaced the engine. All is good now, car driving great and we are grateful they resolved the issue.""

Anonymous, (2018 Hyundai Tucson SEL 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Other minor engine problem

"Engine not made well. Consumes too much oil. Have to fill 1 quart every 3 weeks."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Hyundai Tucson Unsure 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Uses 1 quart of oil per 8-900 miles."

Anonymous, OR (2018 Hyundai Tucson Unsure 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

""currently losing 3qts engine oil every two months, no visible leaks but exhaust pipe soot indicates slow burning, has not yet been diagnosed by a repair shop""

Anonymous, NC (2018 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)

""Due to the same issue that causes the engine to burn more than a quart of oil per 800 miles, the pickup of the vehicle is poor and getting worse. Simply merging onto a highway, even with a long on-ramp, is challenging and borderline dangerous.""

Anonymous, MN (2018 Hyundai Tucson SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt.

What Owners Say

Engine rebuild or replacement

"Engine failed Hyundai replaced"

Anonymous, VT (2018 Hyundai Tucson Unsure 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Complete engine failure at 70,00 miles. Car shut down on freeway. Warranty covered engine, but still had to pay $5,000 out of pocket for tow trucks and car rental fees during repair and labor/arts for air conditioner. Condenser stopped working after the engine blew, but dealer said Hyundai wouldn't pay for that."

Anonymous, OH (2018 Hyundai Tucson SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

""Required full engine replacement, burning 4qts oil per 1000 miles. Very common problem with this engine that Hyundai has not rectified.""

Anonymous A., CO (2018 Hyundai Tucson SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Other major engine problem

"Car lacks acceleration which can be dangerous"

Anonymous, RI (2018 Hyundai Tucson SE 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Burns more than a quart of oil per 800 miles. This is a known problem and Hyundai will not address it despite multiple lawsuits in several states. The vehicle itself is nice but it's ridiculous to have to continue to monitor oil levels and worry about engine damage. I will never buy another Hyundai gas vehicle. Do not buy one."

Anonymous, MN (2018 Hyundai Tucson SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector and linkage, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission, leaks.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

""hard engagement when shifting into reverse, rough upshifting under certain conditions""

Anonymous, ON (2018 Hyundai Tucson Value 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"since about 7000 or so miles, the shifting is very rough and long lag with acceleration when engine is cold. especially when A/C is on. i've seen many complaints about this online, but Hyundai has not issued any recalls that i'm aware of. takes an otherwise pretty decent car and ruins the experience. I back into the driveway so i dont have to go in reverse when it's cold, shifting to drive the car would launch back and forth, sometimes violently. also, when accelerating initially, the car bogs down. added fuel cleaners often, but nothing helps."

Anonymous A., FL (2018 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Climate System

AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate system, electrical failure, refrigerant leakage.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"Stopped working when the engine blew. Hyundai said was out of warranty, even though the engine blwing out was the cause of the condenser failure."

Anonymous, OH (2018 Hyundai Tucson SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Refrigerant leaks

"Refrigerant leak that dealer couldn't find. They filled it now air-conditioning working but for how long I don't know. It was what I thought was an expensive repair especially since I'm not sure if it will occur again."

Anonymous A., NJ (2018 Hyundai Tucson SEL Unsure)

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

What Owners Say

Other/unsure

"Paint all over the car was peeling off. There is a factory recall and Hyundai repainted the entire car. They did however break the windshield while they were taking the panels off to re-paint; said that was NOT covered under the recall; WHAT? So, we had to pay for a windshild replacement; not happy about that."

Anonymous, VA (2018 Hyundai Tucson SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, peeling, or cracking), loose interior or exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

An engine compartment fire can increase the risk of injury or crash.
Summary:
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) recalled certain 2019-2021 Tucson vehicles on September 4, 2020. On December 30, 2020, Hyundai expanded the recall population, and added certain 2016-2018 Tucson vehicles. The Anti-lock Brake Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) could corrode internally and cause an electrical short, possibly resulting in an engine compartment fire.
What should you do:
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the HECU fuse. For 2019-2021 model years, the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) software will also be updated. Recall repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures as a precaution until the recall repair is complete. The recall began November 2, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 195.
