For its second generation, the popular Hyundai Palisade has gone big, with an increase in size and a significant gain in weight, along with more premium features, and even a mildly off-road-capable trim. The new Palisade’s stylish interior and exterior might make you wonder if this is yet another refreshed model that prioritizes aesthetics over intuitiveness. Luckily, the three-row midsized Palisade remains refreshingly logical. The exterior door handles are simple, it has large windows for excellent outward visibility, and a straightforward infotainment system and mostly easy-to-use controls.

Current Generation

For its second generation, the popular three-row midsized Palisade has gone big, with an increase in size, along with more premium features, and a mildly off-road-capable trim called the XRT Pro. A hybrid version is also new. The Palisade has a new 287-hp, 3.5-liter V6 paired to an eight-speed automatic, a combination that feels lazier than the previous model. With 0 to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds, the new Palisade is one of the slowest in the class. Fuel economy fell by 1 mpg, now at 20 mpg overall. Front-wheel drive comes standard, with all-wheel drive optional. Towing is rated at 5,000 pounds. The interior, especially on the fancy Calligraphy trim we tested, gains numerous thoughtful touches, and looks and feels like a luxury model. We found the front seats reasonably comfortable, while the second row is roomy and features lots of adjustments. The third-row seat is best for kids. The updated infotainment system is easy to use, but the climate controls are trickier.

2020 Redesign Year

The 2020 Palisade three-row midsized SUV can seat seven or eight people, depending on whether the second row is a bench or two separate seats. It shares many components with the Kia Telluride, including its smooth 291-hp, 3.8-liter V6 that's paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The roomy cabin is very quiet. The Palisade rides comfortably, but handling is not particularly nimble. The interior is filled with thoughtful details. It benefits from simple controls, except for the unintuitive push-button gear selector and the faraway touch screen for the infotainment system. Several advanced safety systems come standard, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane keeping assistance, driver monitoring, and rear occupant alert. Updates for 2021 include the new top-shelf Calligraphy trim, which includes various interior and exterior styling cues, and special 20-inch wheels. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity is also new, and LED headlamps are now standard. For 2022, blind spot warning and rear cross traffic warning are standard on all trims.
