More Ford Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs Recalled for Fire Risk

A cracked fuel injector is to blame for this expansion of an earlier recall

After a much larger recall in 2022, Ford is recalling an additional 42,652 Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs from the 2022 and 2023 model years because a fuel injector may crack and leak gasoline inside the engine compartment, which could cause a fire. Only vehicles with the 1.5-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder engine are included in the recall.

    MORE ON CAR RECALLS

The automaker already recalled more than half a million Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs for the same issue in 2022, but it found that the problem applied to more vehicles than previously thought. If your vehicle wasn’t recalled previously, check your car again on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website to find out whether it is now part of the latest recall.

To fix the problem, Ford dealerships will update engine control software to include fuel injector leak detection and install a drain tube, free of charge—the same repair procedure the automaker used in prior recalls for the same issue. According to NHTSA, the recall remedy does not involve replacing the cracked fuel injector.

On April 11, NHTSA’s Office of Defect Investigation announced that it is reviewing this proposed remedy to evaluate its adequacy and safety consequences.

In documents provided to NHTSA, Ford says it is aware of five fires, 14 warranty claims, and no crashes or injuries related to the group of vehicles recalled today. A timeline filed with NHTSA indicates four possible injuries and 43 legal claims related to the 2022 recall.

Some other Ford Escape and Bronco Sport SUVs were also recalled for a different fire-related recall in 2022. That recall had to do with an oil leak, not a fuel leak.

    Ford SUV Recall Details

    Vehicles Recalled
    • Ford Bronco Sport SUVs manufactured between Oct. 17, 2022, and Jan. 13, 2023
    • Ford Escape SUVs manufactured between Oct. 17, 2022, and Dec. 15, 2022

The problem: A cracked fuel injector could allow fuel or fuel vapor to contact a hot surface and potentially ignite.

The fix: Dealers will inspect the fuel injectors, update the engine control software to include fuel injector leak detection, and install a drain tube, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Ford at 866-436-7332.

NHTSA campaign number: 24V187. Ford’s own number for this recall is 24S16.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
