CR's Take
This outdated model is merely a rebadged previous-generation Tahoe that demands a premium price. The redesigned GMC Yukon and Chevy Tahoe are more sophisticated and less expensive. Virtues include a smooth-shifting transmission and selectable full-time four-wheel drive. But, based on our experience with the last Tahoe we tested, expect sloppy handling, abysmal fuel economy, and awful brakes. For 2001, the Escalade gets the newer truck chassis and powertrains on the Tahoe and Yukon.
