CR's Take

The BMW X4 is based on the X3, and has more safety technology and an additional inch of legroom compared with its predecessor. But its coupelike profile sacrifices some utility and visibility compared with the X3. The base version is called the xDrive30i and features a 248-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine; the M40i is powered by a 382-hp turbo six-cylinder engine. Both have all-wheel drive and a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment. We found the X3 to be thoroughly engaging to drive and would expect similar performance from the X4. FCW, AEB with pedestrian detection, BSW, and RCTW are standard, as is a 10.25-inch touch screen with navigation.

Current Generation

The BMW X4 was redesigned for 2019 and was based on the current-generation X3. The new X4 gains new safety technology and an inch of legroom over its predecessor. But its coupelike profile sacrifices some utility and visibility for a more athletic appearance. The base version is now called the xDrive30i and features a 248-hp, turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the M40i is powered by a 355-hp, six-cylinder turbo engine. Both have all-wheel drive and a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment. We found the X3 thoroughly engaging to drive and expect similar performance from the X4. Forward collision warning and city-speed automatic emergency braking are standard, as is a 10.25-inch touch screen with navigation.

2015-2018

2015 Redesign Year

Emphasizing sport over utility, the X4 is a coupelike variant of the X3. It's agile, rides tautly, and has a beautifully trimmed cabin. Front and rear seats are lowered to keep passengers' heads from hitting the low roof, and the cargo space shrinks considerably under the sloping rear hatch, making it a less practical SUV. Engine choices are a 240-hp, 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder and a 300-hp, 3.0-liter turbo six-cylinder that is particularly smooth and powerful. Both engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is standard. Optional 19-inch tires make the ride a bit too jiggly.
