In an ideal scenario, a robotic vacuum can help busy pet owners maintain the cleanliness of their homes by picking up any fur that their cat or dog has shed. But not every robovac is up to the task; some are more effective than others. In our lab tests, we’ve found that many robotic vacuums tend to drag strands of pet hair around instead of suctioning them up. Or the hair they pick up ends up stuck in the brushes, which can create a headache later when you have to clean the brush rolls.

On the other hand, the robotic vacuums that scored highly in our pet hair tests were able to pick up almost all the hair we embedded in carpets without getting it entangled in the brushes. We also found that the best robotics for cleaning pet hair usually come equipped with a turbo setting or booster mode, which helps them capture more hair than other models.

At Consumer Reports, we test robotic vacuums from more than a dozen brands, including Dyson, Ecovacs, Eufy, iRobot, Samsung, Roborock, and Shark. Below, we’ve listed (in alphabetical order) the five top-rated robotic vacuums our testers recommend for sweeping up pet hair.

And see our full ratings of almost 50 robotic vacuums as well as additional CR coverage, including our picks of the best robotic vacuums overall and the best robotic vacuums for $300 or less.

One of the most notable attributes of the Dyson 360 Vis Nav is its strong suction, which translates into a strong performance at picking up pet hair. Instead of a conventional side brush, it uses an extending side duct to tackle edges and corners. It has a large brush roll that spans the full width of the vacuum for effective cleaning. And although its dustbin is relatively small, it’s equipped with a convenient one-touch ejection system for easy emptying. CR doesn’t have enough data yet to score Dyson robot vacuums on predicted reliability and owner satisfaction.

For a budget-friendly option, consider the Eufy RoboVac X8, a model that’s a whiz at picking up pet hair and performs excellently at cleaning bare floors as well as navigating our test areas. It’s also stellar at cleaning edges and corners, but we found that it has a tendency to scatter debris. It comes with an extra filter, a filter cleaning tool, and a docking station. It’s worth mentioning that the Eufy Robovac X8 earns only so-so marks for data security and even lower scores for data privacy. But as a brand, Eufy robot vacuums earn favorable marks for predicted reliability and owner satisfaction in our member surveys.

The Narwal Freo X Plus YJCC018 excels in pet hair pickup and earns an excellent mark for cleaning bare floors. This Wi-Fi-enabled model also garners a very good score for cleaning edges and carpets. It’s both a robotic vacuum and mop, though we’ve only tested its vacuuming functions. The model features an air compression system to compact dirt and dust so that you don’t have to empty the bin frequently. (It also has one of the largest dirt bins in the models we’ve tested.) CR doesn’t have enough data yet to score Narwal robot vacuums on predicted reliability and owner satisfaction.

The Roborock S8 Pro Ultra is a top-rated robotic vacuum that performs well at cleaning pet hair on both carpet and bare floors. Our testers like that it features a dual rubber brush, which allows users to easily remove pet hair by popping off the end of the brush roll. It also has an auto-empty base, meaning it cleans up after itself. Once the bot is docked, a vacuum in the docking station automatically sucks the contents from the dirt bin into the base. But it’s one of the noisier models we’ve evaluated, receiving only a passable score on that test. The Roborock S8 Pro Ultra is also a robotic mop, but we haven’t tested its mopping abilities.

The Shark Matrix RV2310AE received top scores in our tests for its ability to pick up pet hair and clean bare floors. It also offers very good navigation and garners an excellent rating for ease of use. It comes with a self-emptying dock. This model features WiFi connectivity, and in our tests, we found its data security to be quite strong, but its data privacy is middling. Shark’s robotic vacuums, as a brand, receive average owner satisfaction ratings and very good reliability scores in CR’s latest member surveys.

How CR Tests Robotic Vacuums for Pet Hair Removal
Our technicians use 1 gram of Maine coon cat fur and embed it into medium-pile carpet. The robotic vac’s dustbin is weighed after cleaning to measure the precise amount of hair captured.

In addition to assessing each robotic vacuum’s pet hair removal performance, we also test its ability to pick up dirt on carpet and bare floors. Our testers also take into account how easy a vacuum is to handle and how much noise it makes. And like our ratings for other household appliances, Consumer Reports assesses each vacuum brand’s owner satisfaction and predicted reliability based on our member surveys.
