In an ideal scenario, a robot vacuum can help busy pet owners maintain the cleanliness of their homes by picking up any fur shed by their dog or cat. But not every robot vacuum is up to the task. In our lab tests, we’ve found that some robot vacuums drag strands of pet hair around instead of suctioning them up. Or the hair they pick up gets stuck in the brushes, which can cause a headache later when you have to clean the brush rolls.
On the other hand, the robot vacuums that score highly in our pet hair tests pick up almost all the hair we embed in carpets without it getting entangled in the brushes. We also found that the best robotic vacuums for cleaning pet hair usually come equipped with a turbo setting or booster mode, which helps them capture more hair than other models.
At Consumer Reports, we test robot vacuums from more than a dozen brands, including Dyson, Eufy, iRobot, Miele, Samsung, and Shark. Our vacuum ratings divide them into two categories: robotic vacuums and robotic vacuum and mop combos, which have both vacuuming and mopping abilities. Below, we’ve listed (in alphabetical order) the six top-rated models our testers recommend for sweeping up pet hair. We’ve included both robot vacuums and robot vacuum and mop combos.
Check our vacuum cleaner buying guide to learn more about how we test robotic vacuums and other types of vacuums. For more choices in robot vacuums, see our full ratings, which include more than 30 robots, and additional CR coverage, including our picks for the best robot vacuums and the best robot vacuum-mop combos overall.
The robot vacuum and mop combo, Dreame L40 Ultra, is superb at picking up pet hair from carpets and debris from bare floors. It’s also very good at mopping up dried stains, which is an area that many robot vacuum and mop combos we’ve tested struggled with, believe it or not. With the Dreame L40 Ultra, you can set up “pet zones” in your home so that it doesn’t bump into your pet’s bed or water bowl. It also has a video monitoring feature that lets you interact with your pet when you’re away. We currently don’t have ratings on reliability or owner satisfaction for robot vacuum and mop combos yet. But we do for robot vacuums, as you’ll see below for the Dyson, Eufy, Eureka, and iRobot units.
The Eufy C10 T2292 is one of the least expensive robovacs we’ve tested, and it’s a testament to the fact that a low price doesn’t equate to low performance. It’s proficient at sweeping up pet hair and does so without catching it in its brush rolls. It comes with an automatic emptying station, which spares you from having to frequently empty the vacuum’s dustbin. Eufy robot vacuums earn a near-top-level score for predicted reliability and a middling score for owner satisfaction, based on our member surveys.
Another great budget pick, the Eureka NERE10SW picks up pet hair quickly and effectively. It’s also very good at cleaning carpets, which can sometimes be a challenge for robot vacuums. While it’s only so-so at sweeping up debris in the corners and edges of a room, it impressed us with its navigational skills. This vacuum comes with a self-emptying base.
The iRobot Roomba Max 705 eliminates pet hair from carpets with aplomb, and its anti-tangle rubber brushes live up to their name. In our lab tests, this vacuum did a great job of preventing pet hair from getting caught in its brush roll. It also does well at clearing debris from bare, uncarpeted floors and at mapping and navigating a home. The vacuum has a self-emptying dock, allowing busy pet owners to be more hands-free during cleaning. Based on our member surveys, iRobot robotic vacs earned decent ratings in reliability and owner satisfaction. Last December, iRobot filed for bankruptcy but assured consumers that the app functions and customer support of its robot vacuums wouldn’t be disrupted.
The Samsung Jet Bot VR7MD96514G robot vacuum and mop combo is more expensive than many other models, but its cleaning performance makes it worth it. It’s impressive at sucking up pet hair and leaving your spaces fur-free, and its mopping ability beats every robot vacuum and mop we’ve tested. The Samsung Jet Bot comes with a docking station that automatically empties its dustbin, washes and dries its mop pads, and refills its water tank so that busy pet owners can be more hands-free.
How CR Tests Robotic Vacuums for Pet Hair Removal
To test a vacuum’s ability to pick up pet hair, our technicians embed 1 gram of Maine coon cat fur into a medium-pile carpet. After cleaning, the robotic vac’s dustbin is weighed to measure the precise amount of hair captured.
In addition to assessing each robot vacuum’s pet hair removal performance, we also test its ability to pick up dirt on carpet and bare floors. Our testers also consider how easy a vacuum is to handle and how much noise it makes. And, as with our ratings for other household appliances, Consumer Reports assesses each vacuum brand’s owner satisfaction and predicted reliability based on our member surveys.
