In Consumer Reports’ cooking appliance lab, our engineers and technicians put dozens of new gas ranges through their paces each year. Our performance tests capture everything from how quickly a model heats water to how evenly it bakes.

But we also look into how appliances hold up outside the lab, in the real world of our members’ homes. We survey members every year about the products they own, and we use that data to make projections about how new models from a given brand will hold up over time—our predicted reliability ratings.

    More on Ranges

We also ask members how likely they are to recommend their range, and that serves as the basis for our owner satisfaction rating.

These latest findings come from the Consumer Reports 2023, 2024, and 2025 Spring Surveys, based on data for 39,447 ranges owned by members who purchased a new unit between 2015 and 2025.

“The reliability between gas range brands varies,” says Martin Lachter, who oversees range surveys. Only one gas range brand we’ve tested earns a top-tier rating for reliability, according to survey respondents with gas stoves that weren’t described as pro-style. (You can find our survey results for pro-style stoves in our article on the most and least reliable pro-style range brands.)
