What is it? Kia is applying its familiar strategy to yet another segment with the stylish Forte Koup. In other words, nothing innovative, just a relatively high level of comfort, convenience, and safety features combined with a reasonable price. The Koup joins the new compact Forte sedan, which replaces the Spectra and was previously introduced at the Chicago auto show earlier this year. Two trim levels will be offered. The EX gets a 2.0-liter, 156-horsepower four-cylinder engine matched with either a four-speed automatic or five speed manual transmission. The SX comes with a more aggressively tuned suspension for sportier handling, and a 2.4-liter, 173-horsepower engine matched with either a five speed automatic or six-speed manual. Standard safety features for all Koups include curtain air bags, active head restraints, and electronic stability control. Bluetooth connectivity and USB and auxiliary input jacks are standard, and a host of options include leather upholstery and a power moonroof.
What is new or notable? Kia's first sport coupe bears a strong resemblance to the concept coupe shown last year, but adds a more upright roofline that Kia claims will allow seating for up to five passengers and is more spacious than Honda Civic, Chevrolet Cobalt, or Scion tC coupes.
CR's take: Dropping the Spectra name is no loss: the Spectra was a lackluster and uncompetitive small car. A preproduction Forte that weve driven had much tighter suspension, consistent with Kias attempt to be a sporty brand. In the same vein, offering the Forte as a relatively practical coupe (or Koup) with upright packaging follows in the footsteps of the Honda Civic and Ford Focus.
When will it be available? Sedan early summer; Koup late summer 2009
