What is it? The ML 450 hybrid combines a six-cylinder gasoline engine with two compact electric motors and is Mercedes-Benz first full-hybrid design and is capable of operating on electric power, gasoline, or a combination of both. The automaker claims the ML 450 will deliver the power of a V8, yet get the fuel economy of a four cylinder in both city and highway environments. Mercedes-Benz claims fuel economy is 24 on the highway and 21 mpg in the city. The hybrid powertrain produces a total of 381 horsepower, and delivers 381 pound foot of torque. The ML 450 retains the all-wheel drive and other specifications and features of the conventionally powered ML, and will be sold only in the United States and Canada.

What is new or notable? The ML 450's control system makes up to 160 calculations per second to operate at maximum efficiency calculate calculates the most efficient mode.
