What is it? Equus is an ultra-luxury sedan from budget-automaker Hyundai. Where the successful Genesis sedan is targeted at midsized luxury sedans such as the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the Equus is designed to compete more with premium cars like the S-Class and Lexus LS. The car is 203-inches long, two inches shorter than an S550, and seven inches longer than a Genesis. The wheelbase is four inches longer than a Genesis, but 10-inches shorter than the S550. The Equus has the same engine choices as the Genesis, a 290-hp 3.8-liter V6 or a 375-hp V8. The Equus has the expected rich complement of luxury and safety features, including an adjustable independent air suspension.
What is new or notable: First introduced at the Seoul Motor Show, the Equus will go on sale in Korea this fall. Theres no word whether it will be sold in the United States, though Hyundai brought it to New York to gauge interest from American car shoppers.
CR's take: An S-Class without the flashy Mercedes star could be just the thing for contrite Wall Street moguls in a landmark recession especially if Hyundai could keep the price within their newly tightened budgets.
