What is it? The GMC Terrain five-passenger SUV made its world debut at the New York International Auto Show. It features a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with direct injection that is expected to return an EPA-rated 30 mpg in highway driving. It will also be available in a 3.0-liter V6 delivering an estimated 264 horsepower. with a projected fuel economy of 25 mpg on the highway. Front-wheel and all-wheel drive will be offered in two trim levels.

Standard safety features include electronic stability control, traction control, six standard air bags, rear backup camera, and OnStar. It will also feature a programmable power liftgate, sliding rear seat, and remote vehicle start.

The Terrain gives GMC a much-needed entry in the competitive small-to-midsized, crossover market, slotting beneath the larger, three-row GMC Acadia. Its chief competition may be the redesigned Chevrolet Equinox.

What's new or notable? With an estimated 30 mpg, this crossover would be the most fuel efficient in its class.

CR's take: Take a redesigned (and much improved) 2010 Equinox. Add big fender flares, a more vertical backlight, and more standard equipment. You wind up with the Terrain. Farewell, Pontiac Torrent, you weren't particularly missed.

When will it be available? Late summer.
