What is it? Nissan is broadening its van lineup with the NV200 compact van. Already on sale in some 40 countries around the world, the NV200 is similar in size and mission to the Ford Transit Connect. This compact van has seating for two and a 1,500-lb. estimated maximum payload capacity.

Nissan says the U.S. version has been stretched 7.9 inches for additional cargo capacity, and that the load floor is large enough to accommodate a standard 40x48-inch shipping pallet. The interior is fitted with built-in anchor points, eliminating the need for drilling to add shelving or tie-down cargo.

Power comes from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine matched with a continuously variable (CVT) automatic transmission. Comfort and convenience options include Bluetooth, heated outside mirrors, and remote keyless entry.

What is new or notable? Whether you like the look or not, get used to it. The NV200 has been selected as the designated taxi of New York City for the next decade. Other cities are likely to follow the Big Apple’s lead.

CR's take: Compact pickups have been around for decades, providing a sensible, more fuel-efficient alternative to full-size models. It’s good to see manufacturers offering small vans for the same reasons.

When will it be available? Early 2013.
