What is it? The Encore, derived from the small Chevrolet Sonic, is a new compact, five-passenger
SUV with a small, narrow cabin. Fuel-saving features include low-rolling-resistance tires and an automatic engine start-stop system.
Available with front- or all-wheel drive, the Encore will use a 140-hp, 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission that works well in other GM models. The Encore offers a variety of safety and infotainment features. A noise-canceling
system uses microphones to detect cabin noise, then emits counteracting sound waves through the car’s audio system.
What’s new or notable? In keeping with Buick’s luxury feel, this model will feature a number of ways to reduce noise in the cabin including Buick’s first use of active noise cancellation technology. Ceiling-mounted microphones will detect engine noise, and will be processed by a computer that directs counteracting sound waves through the audio system. Other quiet features include sound-absorbing materials in the cabin and under the hood, quiet-tuned 18-inch Continental tires, aero-optimized outside mirrors, and acoustic-laminated windshield and thicker side window glass.
When will it be available? First quarter of 2013.
