What is it? Hyundai revealed the Elantra Touring at the Chicago Auto Show. This five-door vehicle was presented as a sportier version sibling to the Elantra sedan, based on a European-market platform. It uses the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine as the sedan, but the Touring has its suspension and steering tuned for a livelier driving experience. The feel between the two body styles could be dramatic, as the Touring has 24-percent stiffer front springs, 39-percent stiffer rear spring rate, and larger anti-roll bars. It also rides on a two-inch longer wheelbase.
The Touring has a healthy roster of standard equipment that includes air conditioning, power windows and door locks, heated mirrors, remote keyless entry with alarm, steering wheel-mounted cruise control and audio controls, and eight-way adjustable driver's seat with lumbar support. A 172-watt AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio system with six speakers, USB input, and auxiliary input jack is also standard.
What is new or notable: Significant in this class, standard safety features include electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, active head rests, and six standard air bags.
When will it be available? Late 2008.
