What is it? GMC has announced a hybrid version of their recently redesigned Sierra pickup. General Motors claims it will achieve 40 percent greater fuel economy in city driving and 25 percent better overall. The Sierra will use GM’s two-mode hybrid system that teams a 300-volt nickel-metal-hydride battery pack and electrically variable transmission with a 6.0-liter V8 engine. The Sierra will be capable of driving on all-electric power up to 30 mph. Towing capacity of this full-sized pickup is rated at 6,100 lbs.

Stability control will be standard, as well as a trailering package. The Sierra also will offer dual-stage frontal air bags and head curtain side air bags.

What’s new or notable? GM is touting the quietness of this vehicle with such features as a new exhaust system, additional engine intake induction tuned for reduced noise, low-rolling resistance “quiet tuned” tires, and an electrically driven air conditioning compressor and power steering, which both reduce vibration.

When will it be available? Late 2008.
