What is it?
The second-generation of Hyundai's SUV has grown up. It is based on a longer platform to make room for an optional third-row seat. The new Santa Fe will come with a choice of two new V6 engines, a 180-hp, 2.7-liter with a four-speed automatic transmission or a 230-hp 3.3 liter. It offers a raft of luxury features associated with more expensive cars, including windshield wiper de-icers, heated power mirrors, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. But most important, Hyundai makes advanced safety features such as electronic stability control, three-row side-curtain air bags, and front side-torso air bags standard. Also standard is a tilt and telescoping steering wheel to help all drivers find the best driving position. Hyundai is coy about the price, saying less than a Toyota Highlander but more than the new RAV4; expect prices around $27,000 to $30,000.
CR's take:
With its redesigned Santa Fe, Hyundai obviously plans to compete head-on with the seven-passenger Toyota Highlander, but claims to have benchmarked more upscale SUVs, such as the Lexus RX330, BMW X5, and Volvo XC90. As with most midsized SUVs, however, the Santa Fe's third row is tight and best for children. It also leaves little cargo space when raised. With its full complement of safety features, this SUV should be a strong value.
What's new or notable?
The optional third-row seat will allow the new Santa Fe to carry up to seven passengers.
When will it be on sale?
Late this summer as a 2007 model.
