What is it?
This small SUV concept reflects the styling direction that Kia plans for its next SUVs. Like other small SUV concepts at the Detroit Auto Show this year, the Soul has rear hinged back doors with no central pillar between the front and rear doors. This makes it easier to access the rear seat. The tailgate incorporates a compartment in the lower half that opens like a mail slot to accommodate cargo that's too messy to stow inside the car. In keeping with the electronics theme of many other concept vehicles, there is a LCD computer and game monitor in the glove compartment, and a laptop computer on a tray that swings out from the dashboard to either the driver or passenger side. The system can use WiFi and Bluetooth wireless connections, has ports to plug in USB devices, and can play MP3s. The interior is designed around the electronics, rather than the other way around.
What's new or notable?
Most notable about the Soul is its styling, which further explores design cues seen on the Mesa concept vehicle shown at last year's Detroit Auto Show.
CR's take:
This appealing concept car shows that a company could create a vehicle that combines the versatility of the Scion xB and Honda Element - but with attractive styling. The separate external storage compartment for wet or muddy sports equipment is a handy feature.
