What is it? Following a hiatus of more than three years since the Z3-based coupe was in production, BMW has announced that it will produce a Z4 coupe, as well as an M-badged high-performance version. The two cars are derived from the Z4 roadster, but they have a fixed roof and a large rear hatchback. Front interior space is similar to the Z4 convertible, but the coupes will have an expanded cargo area underneath the glass hatchback. Power for the Z4 version will come from a 3.0-liter, 265-hp six-cylinder engine, while the M coupe will use a version of the current BMW M3's 3.2-liter engine. Both versions will power the rear wheels. BMW claims the stiffened body 'ensures driving dynamics of the highest standard.' In our tests we found the Z4 roadster was not nearly as sporty as some of its competitors. Expect the same comfort and safety items from the Z4 roadster to appear in these coupes.
CR Take: This coupe is likely to win more friends than its previous-generation thanks to a more generally appealing design. Still it enters a relatively crowded market (Porsche Cayman, Audi TT, Nissan 350Z) These coupes often have sharper handling than their roadster versions, but since they lack the frivolity of a convertible top, they appeal to a limited market.
What is new or notable? The timing of these coupes is significant, as Porsche has already put the Cayman into production, and Audi will unveil a replacement for the TT in 2006.
When will it be on sale? June 2006
