What is it?
Following the market shift toward car-based, crossover-type SUVs, Dodge unveiled its five-door replacement for the Neon sedan. The Caliber shares the same platform and dimensions as the 2007 Jeep Compass, also unveiled in Detroit. The Caliber has a flexible interior with split-folding rear seats that also recline, and a fold-flat front seat to accommodate long cargo. The rear cargo area is covered with vinyl, though the seat backs are not. Numerous handy features were spread throughout the interior, such as an iPod/cell phone holder within the front armrest; a beverage-cooling shelf in the glove box; and dual-purpose map light/removable flashlight. The optional MusicGate Power audio system includes liftgate-mounted speakers that can fold down and face reward for outdoor listening. Three four-cylinder engines will be offered in 148-, 158-, and 172-horsepower versions, with a choice of manual and continuously variable transmissions. The Caliber will be sold in both front- and all-wheel-drive configurations. Side-curtain air bags will be standard.
What is new or notable?
The Caliber's $13,985 base price undercuts the Neon it replaces, while offering more standard equipment.
When will it be on sale? Winter 2006, as a 2007 model.
