What is it?
Jeep has significantly redesigned the Wrangler for 2007, addressing key critical weaknesses while preserving its iconic appearance and off-road ability. The new Wrangler is 5.1 inches longer and measures five inches wider than the model it replaces, creating both a larger track for stability and increased cabin space. In addition, a two-inch longer wheelbase, stiffer frame, and coil springs at each corner could help improve ride quality. Vehicle safety has been upgraded with available electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, antilock brakes, seat-mounted side air bags, and head rests on the second-row seats. The interior has been incrementally modernized with available power windows and door locks, a navigation system, Sirius satellite radio, and 368-watt Alpine audio system. The current 4.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine has been supplanted by a more-powerful 3.8-liter, 205-horsepower V6 engine, which will be offered with a six-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The new Wrangler also promises improved off-road ability with larger wheels and tires, enhanced axles and transfer cases, electric axle lockers, front disconnecting sway bar, and increased ground clearance. Among the notable features is a three-way removable hard top with panels that can be removed for various open-air configurations. In its first year, the new Wrangler will be offered in X, Sahara, and Rubicon trim levels.
CR's take:
This looks to be a kinder, gentler Wrangler that preserves its link to the past through traditional styling cues. Painted metal isn't visible inside anymore and the roof panels are removable, which promises to be an improvement over the laborious top folding/removal process on the current Wrangler. Hedonistic luxuries like power windows will be available. More important, standard electronic stability control with roll mitigation will improve safety. Jeep traditionalists may mourn the end of the tired inline six-cylinder engine, which will be replaced with a V6, but we won't.
What is new or notable?
This is the most dramatic model-to-model evolution for this line since the original 1941 Willys MB. But then, the current Wrangler had a long way to go.
When will it be on sale?
Fall 2006, as a 2007 model.
