What is it? This open-top, lightweight sports car concept foreshadows the introduction of a (likely toned down) production version later this decade. The Urge's styling was inspired by today's swoopy motorcycle designs. It uses a front-mounted 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, a six-speed 6-speed manual transmission, and rear-wheel drive. This driveable concept weighs only 2,800 pounds, which is light for today's cars. The Urge has two mesh front seats and a center rear mesh seat that folds up to form part of the trunk lid when not in use. It also incorporates a Xbox 360 gaming system controlled by the car's steering wheel and pedals when the car is parked.

CR's take: No one has ever accused Nissan's current sports car, the 350Z, of being lightweight. Nissan also has lacked a low-priced sports coupe since the rear-wheel-drive 240SX was cancelled. The Urge would fill that role. The Urge's built-in Xbox 360 creates an interesting question: Might virtually driving be more fun for some young enthusiasts than actually driving? At least, that's one way to cut fuel costs.

What's new or notable? It's certainly notable that Nissan is planning on bringing out a small sports car in the not-too-distant future. But for video gamers, the Xbox option-using the car's actual steering wheel and pedals-makes the Urge the ultimate game console.

When will it be on sale? Nissan says a production model of the Urge will be available within this decade.
