What is it? With this sixth-generation version of its midsized sedan, Toyota says it has made the Camry sportier. The new model will have more powerful four- and six-cylinder engines and be offered with a hybrid powertrain. The four-cylinder produces 154 horsepower and, according to the company, is rated at 28 mpg overall. It comes with either a 5-speed-manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. The 268-hp V6 comes with a 6-speed automatic and is rated at 26 mpg overall. In contrast to the Honda Accord Hybrid, the Camry hybrid is tuned for optimal fuel economy. It uses the four-cylinder engine and is rated at 192 hp and 41 mpg overall. The Camry is available in DE, LE, XLE, SE and hybrid trims. The SE model has a sport-tuned suspension and comes with the V6 engine. The XLE model has upholstery infused with Sericin, which is supposed to be good for the skin. A navigation system is optional.

CR's take: With all the hype and hoopla of a show brimming with car-based "crossover" SUVs and retro muscle cars, it was almost easy to overlook the redesign of the best-selling sedan in America. This new version now shares a platform and optional V6 engine with the larger Avalon. Styling resembles a ¾-scale Lexus LS460. Toyota executives said that the new styling was driven by owner complaints that their earlier Camrys looked "vanilla," but the redesign doesn't exactly inspire excitement. The hybrid model is based on the four-cylinder version. Given lackluster sales of the six-cylinder Honda Accord Hybrid, with its emphasis on "performance," a four-cylinder Camry Hybrid that puts more weight on fuel economy while still providing good acceleration may prove to be a better way to go.

What's new or notable? This major redesign of the best-selling Camry line includes a new platform, stronger engines, and a new hybrid version that is said to get 41 mpg overall.

When will it be on sale? Spring 2006, as a 2007 model.
