What is it? The second generation of Kia's midsized sedan is longer and wider than the old Optima. It comes with standard side-curtain air bags, heated mirrors, and a tilt and telescoping steering wheel. The Optima comes with a choice of two engines: a 161-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder or a 185-hp, 2.7-liter V6. The automatic transmission is a five-speed; the four-cylinder comes with a 5-speed manual. The Optima is available LX, EX, and EX leather trim levels. EX models add a power driver's seat, automatic climate control, and an Infinity audio system that can play MP3 files. Electronic Stability Control is optional.
CR's take:
The current Optima is an also-ran in its class. As Kia inferred in their press conference, the most compelling feature has been its low price. The new Optima isn't exactly exciting, but it does look like a clear step forward. While side-curtain air bags are standard, it's too bad that antilock brakes and stability control are optional since corporate parent Hyundai's Sonata has those as standard equipment.
What's new or notable?
The Optima has grown larger with its redesign and the addition of side-curtain air bags is a significant safety improvement.
When will it be on sale?
April 2006.
