What is it? The modern SHO is a reincarnation of the high-performance Taurus sedan that attracted driving enthusiasts in the late 1980s and early 90s. With the second-generation Taurus, the SHO variant fell out of favor with the 1996 V8-powered model. The new SHO, based on the upcoming 2010 Taurus, promises to infuses those three letters enthusiast appeal once again.
The new Taurus SHO will have a 365-hp twin-turbocharged V6, coupled with a six-speed, paddle-shifted automatic and all-wheel-drive. The transmission will match revs on downshifts. Interiors have more luxurious materials than used in a standard Taurus. A Sport version will be available, although Ford has not yet specified what the Sport package will include. Taurus SHO prices will start at about $38,000.
What is new or notable: The new SHO is the first application of Fords new EcoBoost engine family of turbocharged engines with direct fuel injection. The SHO will also offer some of Volvos advanced safety features, such as blind spot detection system that also watches for cross traffic when backing out of a parking space, a collision warning system, and a backup camera. The Sync multimedia system.
CR's take: Were looking forward to trying Fords new EcoBoost V6, but a high-performance sedan seems like the wrong product during an economic downturn.
