What is it? The 2010 LR4 is an extensive reworking (and modest renaming) of the LR3 but not a ground-up redesign. It has an all-new interior and a new Jaguar-sourced 5.0-liter V8 rated at 375-hp, which it shares with the revised Range Rover. A reworking of the controls and gauges places some switchgear closer to the driver, and a new five-inch flat-screen driver-information display sits between the speedometer and tachometer gauges. The suspension has been revamped and the brake system is larger for shorter stops. Some changes have also been made to the off-roading features, such as the hill-descent control system that uses automatic braking to let you crawl down steep inclines. You can also select any of five settings according to terrain, such as sand, grass, mud, or rocky conditions. This has been a Land Rover feature for some time, but the company says that they've improved upon it. A foldable two-person third-row seat brings seating to seven. Nineteen-inch alloy wheels are standard, 20-inch alloys are optional.

What is new or notable? The new standard engine, the 375-hp 5.0-liter V8, is all aluminum and employs direct-injection technology. It delivers 25 percent more horsepower and some 20 percent more torque than the 4.4-liter it replaces, while being somewhat smaller and lighter. Since it reaches peak torque at lower revs, this helps performance both on and off-road. The engine is mated to a revised six-speed automatic transmission.

When will it be available? Fall 2009
