What is it? Fisker showed a convertible version of the Karma sedan at the Detroit show, with a power retractable hardtop that stows in the trunk. Riding on a modified sedan platform, the Karma S is ten inches shorter in overall length. The Karma S uses the same plug-in hybrid powertrain found in the sedan, combining the a same 2.4-liter, turbocharged GM Ecotec four-cylinder engine from the Chevrolet Cobalt SS, a lithium-ion battery pack, and twin electric motors. Fisker claims a 50-mile range for the Karma S using only electric power and up to 403 horsepower total. Fisker says the convertible is planned for production some time after the sedan is launched in fall 2009, but pricing has not yet been set.

What's new or notable? If the Karma S sees production, it could well be the first high-performance, plug-in hybrid luxury convertible in the world.

When will it be available? 2011.
