What is it? The SX4 performance concept has a turbocharged version of the SX4s standard four-cylinder engine, good for 221 hp and 208 lb-ft. of torque. With all-wheel-drive and a lowered, stiffened suspension, the car was made for track days.
The Makai is an open-top SX4 for the beach, with a roll-bar holding up two surfboards for the top and seats that resemble pool chairs.
What is new or notable: Both concepts demonstrate how to have fun on the cheap. The Makai has leather-sling seats, a built-in Garmin navigation system, and a stereo tuned to entertain the whole beach.
CR's take: We had a ball flogging this same SX4 performance concept around a race track last fall. But the more interesting concept is the Makai, a spiritual successor to the Fiat Jolly of the 1960s. Nobody today builds a cheap beach car, and this could easily fit the bill.
