What is it? The replacement for Kia's Spectra small sedan, the Forte is about two inches longer and wider for more passenger space. Kia claims it has the largest trunk of any small sedan. In LX and EX trim levels, the Forte has comes with a 156-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a five-speed manual or a four- or five-speed automatic transmission. SX models get a 173-hp, 2.4-liter Four with a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic. Standard equipment includes Sirius satellite radio with a three-month free subscription, along with curtain air bags, active head restraints, and electronic stability control--key safety features, especially in a small car.

What is new or notable: A special fuel-economy package combines the smaller engine with a five-speed automatic transmission, low-rolling-resistance tires, electric power steering, and aerodynamic improvements for an EPA rating of 27 mpg in the city and 36 on the highway. Kia says other body styles such as a hatchback or coupe will be available later.

CR's take: With consumers pinching pennies, the Forte may have arrived at the right time. Perhaps the most relevant model for the times may be the base LX, which does away with expensive niceties such as power windows and locks and air conditioning.

When will it be available? Summer 2009 (for the sedan).
