What is it?The iMode is a six-passenger crossover vehicle, powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with direct fuel injection. Hyundai claims the engine puts out 280 hp (probably needed to move this big a vehicle) and is good for 30 mpg on the combined EPA cycles. We had seen this concept previously at the LA Auto Show, though thought it was worth a second look.
What is new or notable: The front passenger seat swivels, and the second row slides back to make room for a conversation space in the middle. The iMode has a Wi-Fi-equipped entertainment system with touch screens, wireless keyboards, and game controllers. The idea is that travelers could download music, video, and games on the run.
CR's take: Hyundai has committed to producing a fleet that averages 35 mpg by 2015, five years earlier than the government mandate. To meet that goal with vehicles consumers will want to buy, it will need innovative, fuel-efficient people movers like this.
