What is it? Hyundai showed the HED-5 i-Mode crossover concept featuring an all-new engine, the Theta Turbo GDI. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine uses direct-injection to improve fuel efficiency, while applying a turbocharger to boost power output. The result is 286 horsepower, reportedly produced with less fuel than a comparable V6 would require.
The vehicle itself explores exterior shapes and door design, with a sliding door. When the side doors are open, it creates a large aperture without a B-pillar to aid access for passengers and cargo. Another versatility twist, the front passenger seat rotates to face the second- and third-row passengers. The second row seat can slide backward to create more lounging space. To entertain, the concept vehicle has a Wi-Fi-equipped entertainment system with touch screens, wireless keyboards, and game controllers. The idea is that travelers could download music, video, and games on the run.
What is new or notable? Hyundai is pursuing several powertrain technologies as the company focuses on fuel economy. Beyond the engine, the pursuit can be seen in the construction that was created to minimize weight, and thereby improve mileage. The bodywork itself is coated in a "self healing" water-based paint that can erase minor scratches.
