What is it? The third-generation RX carries on the formula that has made the current model Lexus' best-selling vehicle. That includes a luxurious interior, five-passenger seating, and a wide range of features. This redesigned model gets a slightly longer body and wheelbase, a wider track, and two enhanced drivetrains. The conventional RX350 is powered by a slightly stronger 275-hp, 3.5-liter V6 that's matched with a new sequential-shift 6-speed automatic transmission. The RX 450h hybrid model gets a larger 295-hp, 3.5-liter V6 that delivers 27 more horsepower than the current version, while retaining its Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (SULEV) status.
A new option is a hard-drive based navigation system with a "Remote Touch" controller on the center console, which essentially simulates using a computer mouse to operate the system. In addition, Lexus says its voice-recognition system now acknowledges conversational commands, in addition to conventional ones. There's also a new LED heads-up display and a wide-angle side-view monitor that uses a camera under the passenger-side mirror. Safety features include electronic stability control, Hill Assist Control, and Lexus' Pre-Collision System, which can recognize a possible frontal collision and automatically prime the brake assist system and retract the front safety belts.
What is new or notable: The hybrid model uses two new systems to improve fuel economy. An exhaust-heat recovery system reduces engine warm-up time, which Lexus says allows the gasoline engine to stop earlier, more often, and for longer periods. And a cooled exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) system reduces friction and engine pumping losses. Lexus claims these systems help the RX 350h deliver the fuel economy of an average four-cylinder midsized sedan along with similar power to a V8.
When will it be available? February 2009 for the RX 350, with the RX 450h hybrid coming in the spring.
