What is it? The all-new fifth-generation BMW 7 Series made its North American debut in Los Angeles. Large, powerful, and luxurious, the 7 Series builds on its predecessors by adding more technology to bolster performance and safety.
The 750i and 750iL features a multilink double-wishbone front suspension, with a standard air suspension. The driver can choose from four settings to adjust the shock absorbers, transmission settings, engine-throttle response, and power-steering assist.
The new 7 is motivated by a 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V8 that produces 400 horsepower. BMW claims a 0-60 mph time of 5.1 seconds.
The roster of driver assist and safety features reads like a collection of elements from its premium competitors, including active cruise control, lane departure warning, blind spot detection, high beam assist, night vision, and side/rear view cameras.
What is new or notable: BMW also showcased the 7 Series ActiveHybrid. More mean than green, this luxury sedan pairs a twin-turbo V8 with a mild hybrid system. BMW claims a 15 percent improvement in fuel economy.
When will it be available? Early 2009.
