What is it? Honda unveiled a three-seat sports car based on the FCX Clarity sedan platform and powertrain. It was designed in such a way to take advantage of the packaging flexibility afforded by a fuel cell. As a result, the FC Sport has an exotic shape and unusual seating configuration, with the driver placed front and center. The passengers sit in the second row.
The FC Sport is built in a "mid-engine" format, with the fuel-cell stack positioned between the rear seats and the electric motor just ahead of the rear axle. To carry the theme, the designers have artfully placed the twin hydrogen tanks over the rear axle and left them visible through the rear glass, reminiscent of the engine windows on some premium Italian sports cars.
What is new or notable? The Honda FC Sport shows that fuel-cell vehicles can be fun, and the technology can enable fresh designs.
