What is it? The new G3 hatchback is a Pontiac version of the Chevrolet Aveo. It features EPA-estimated 34 miles per gallon highway and the lowest starting price of any Pontiac: $14,995.

What's new and notable? Badge engineering gives Pontiac a new budget model.

CR's take: We have tested the mechanical twin, Chevrolet Aveo. The delivers unimpressive fuel economy for an economy car, just 25 mpg overall. The 1.6-liter engine provides rather slow acceleration. Handling lacks agility and confidence, with imprecise steering and lots of body lean. The turning circle is tight, making parking lot maneuvers easy. The ride is jittery. For 2009 the 1.6-liter engine gains a few hp. Ultimately, it would take more than a new Pontiac grille to transform this into a competitive car.

When will it be available? March 2009.
