What is it? A full-hybrid version of Ford's midsized sedan, the Fusion hybrid can run on electricity at up to 47 mph, according to external sources. The hybrid uses Ford's new 2.5-liter, 175-hp four-cylinder gas engine, and the company expects it to be EPA-rated at 38 mpg in the city. The company will also build a new version of the Fusion with the larger and smoother 3.5-liter V6 engine, called the Fusion Sport. It will have 268 hp, vs 240 in the standard 3.0-liter V6, and will be offered in front- and all-wheel-drive versions.
What is new or notable? It uses a smaller, lighter battery pack than the Ford Escape Hybrid, yet produces about 124 electric horsepower, for a grand total of about 300 hp for short bursts.
CR's take: The Fusion Hybrid, and its twin, the Mercury Milan Hybrid won't be plug-in hybrids, but they will be on the short list of vehicles that can be converted to plug-ins. The company says it wants this hybrid to be fun to drive. We liked the Fusion's ride and handling, and its basic utility. 300 horsepower should make it fun.
When will it be available? Early 2009
