What is it? Marking another step toward entering the fuel-cell car market, Hyundai unveiled the i-Blue Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle at the Chicago Auto Show. The i-Blue is powered by the third generation of the Korean automaker’s fuel-cell technology with a 100kw electric engine. The fuel-cell stack is stored under the floor and not in the engine compartment, as it was in the second-generation Tucson FCEV. This allows the vehicle to have a 50:50 weight distribution to aid driving performance.
The i-Blue is fueled by compressed hydrogen stored in a 115-liter tank. Hyundai claims a 370-mile range before refueling and a maximum speed of 100 mph.
The futuristic interior has a 2+2 seating arrangement. On the outside, the vehicle’s surroundings are monitored using a full-surround camera system.
What is new or notable: While the i-Blue is only a concept, Hyundai is working toward making this car a reality, aiming to bring it to market between 2012 and 2015.
