What is it? Suzuki unveiled its Equator compact pickup truck in Chicago, displaying three modified examples. The Equator is a Nissan Frontier with limited changes, with the most obvious being the grille. The hood, front fenders, front fascia, bumpers, and tailgate are unique to Suzuki. The Equator will be built at Nissan's manufacturing facility in Smyrna, Tennesse.
Like the Frontier, the Equator will be available in both extended- and crew-cab configurations, each offered in two- and four-wheel drive. The base powertrain is a 152-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, with a five-speed manual or automatic transmission. For greater performance and tow capacity, there is a 261-horsepower, 4.0-liter V6.
The Equator features a spray-on bedliner and a tie-down system with adjustable tracks, like the Frontier. Suzuki dealers will offer bed accessories specifically for loading and securing ATVs and motorcycles.
What is new or notable: Adding a pickup truck to the Suzuki product range will help the brand better connect its ATV, motorcycle, and boating customers with its vehicles. However, there is nothing truly new or notable for consumers, just the familiar, respectable Nissan Frontier with a fresh face that will be sold through a different dealer network.
When will it be available? Late 2008.
