What is it? GMC has unveiled the Denali XT hybrid concept vehicle, which boasts a 50-percent increase in fuel economy over comparable full-sized pickups. The Denali showcases a new 4.9-liter small-block V8 with an estimated 326 horsepower. The engine uses an electrically variable transmission to enhance fuel economy. All-electric propulsion is used at low speeds and on the highway, and a fixed-gear enables efficiency even with a trailer. Towing capacity is estimated at 3,500 lbs.
The XT will feature a “Midgate” that can be lowered to extend the cargo capacity from the bed into the cabin. The rear seats will also fold flat to carry longer items.
What’s new or notable The Denali is the first combination of GM’s two-mode hybrid system with an E85 ethanol-capable engine. In addition, the new muscular unibody design, 23-inch wheels, and lowered suspension is a test for a future design direction.
