What is it? The Volkswagen R32 is an upscale, all-wheel-drive version of VW’s GTI, which is itself a sporty version of the Rabbit (which until last spring was called the Golf). Power comes from a 3.2-liter V6 rated at 250 horsepower. It has an advanced six-speed automatic transmission that can be shifted like a manual.
The R32 is distinguished from the GTI by a four-inch lower ride height, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a few cosmetic differences. The well-appointed cabin is neatly finished and comes with all the accessory trimmings, including heated leather seats, an automatic climate-control system, premium audio system, and safety features that’s now usual on cars costing more than $30,000. The only option is a navigation system. Without that the list price is $32,990 plus destination.
What is new or notable: All-wheel drive, a lowered ride height, an automatic transmission with manual mode, and a plush interior contribute to this car’s sport/luxury focus.
CR’s take: The last-generation R32, based on the Golf, was a gas to drive, and this one should be too. It competes directly with the rally-inspired Subaru WRX STi and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, and sports impeccable fit and finish. We’re interested to see how the R32 will compare with the revamped 2008 Evolution X and WRX STi.
