What is it? Mercury’s version of the large sedan formerly known as the Ford Five Hundred gets a freshening similar to that shown on its stablemate at the Detroit show in January. To go with the changes, both updated sedans get new names. The Five Hundred becomes the Taurus, and the Montego becomes the Sable. Both are powered by a 260-hp, 3.5-liter V6 matched with a new six-speed automatic transmission. In addition to providing a 60 horsepower increase, the new engine is said to be smoother and quieter than the underpowered and unpolished 3.0-liter it replaces.
Like the Taurus, the Sable gets a new, reportedly quieter interior and updated styling. Revised suspensions front and rear are claimed to both improve the ride and reduce noise levels. Safety features include stability control, front side and side-curtain air bags. All-wheel drive will be offered.
What is new or notable: Ford says the Sable moniker has three times the name recognition of Montego, even though the Sable went out of production in 2005.
