What is it? Following the recent Los Angeles auto show unveiling of the all-new Vue small SUV, Saturn has announced plans for gasoline-electric hybrid Green Line and sporty Red Line variants.
The Green Line is powered by a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine matched with an electric motor for assistance during acceleration and energy recovery from regenerative braking. Found in the current Vue Green Line, the system also shuts off the engine at idle. A later version will offer GM's new dual-mode hybrid system that is claimed to further improve mileage; it is said to provide a 45-percent improvement in fuel economy over the gasoline-only model.
The Red Line gets a 250-hp, 3.6-liter V6 and six-speed manual transmission, along with a lowered suspension and 18-inch alloy wheels. Unique front and rear fascias, exterior trim, and badging, along with an upgraded interior with leather and suede seats round out the package.
What is new or notable: Saturn is promising a plug-in hybrid version of the Vue. While no production date has been set, the carmaker promises double the fuel mileage of any SUV on the road.
When will they be available?: Red Line, fall 2007. Green Line, late 2007.
