What is it? General Motors’ Saturn division is turning to its European Opel counterpart for a replacement for the lackluster Ion sedan. One of Europe’s top-selling models, Saturn says the Astra will still have a Continental flavor and sporty handling when the it arrives in the U.S. in the fall. Available as either a two- or four-door hatchback, the compact Astra will be offered in XE and up level XR versions. The standard engine is a 140-hp, 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a five-speed manual transmission; a four-speed automatic will be optional. Standard safety features will include front side and curtain air bags, along with active head restraints. Electronic stability control will be standard on two-door models and optional on the four-door.
What is new or notable: The Astra’s electric power steering system operates the pump only when needed to save fuel.
