Volkswagen Space Up! Blue |
|
What is it?
With its rear-mounted powertrain and focus on abundant interior space, this new concept vehicle is like a modern, green-car reincarnation of the VW microvan. It is powered by an electric drivetrain that can run off of a fuel-cell system or be plugged into an electric outlet for recharging its lithium-ion batteries. When fully charged, the Space Up! Blue can run about 65 miles on battery power alone and another 155 miles on hydrogen power. Combined, the car can go up to 220 miles before needing a recharge or a hydrogen fill-up.
The roof is covered with solar cells that can help recharge the battery or ventilate the car when it’s parked in the sun.
The car’s green theme continues into the interior, where most surfaces are made of recycled materials. The instrument panel and door coverings are made of biopolymers, which are a composite material made of wood, plastics, and additives.
The interior provides ample room for four people and the seats are made with airflow foam that automatically adapts to individual body shapes. All seats can be folded or removed to create extra cargo space. The dash is devoid of conventional hard buttons and controls, instead using a multi-control system with a 7-inch touch-screen display that is sensitive to specific hand movements.
What is new or notable? VW says its high-temperature fuel-cell system is lighter and more efficient than other systems. The company also says the system is less expensive, giving it a greater chance of making it to production.
